Posted on the Karnataka forum this morning
Dear Karnataka fans and friends…..
Karnataka is set to begin a new chapter following the announcement that Lisa, Ian Harris and Gonzalo will be leaving the band.
We look forward to bringing you further news and line up announcements in the near future.
We also look forward to seeing you on the road!
Thank you for your wonderful support!
We wish Lisa, Gonzalo and Ian Harris all the best.
As one door closes another opens…
This came as a complete shock. They’d just released a stunning album, were getting better and better as a live act, and one got the impression they were well on the road to bigger and better things.
As the statement says, it’s not the end. Ian Jones and guitarist Enrico Pinna plan to regroup and promise to be back with a new singer, drummer and keyboard player.
What a shame. What is it about great groups that causes such schisms? I’m tempted to say it’s an inevitable dynamic, where people feel like they could be doing “so much more” on their own — although that isn’t always an honest assessment.
@Serdar I agee it’s a real shame this has happened after the new line up produced such a wonderful album as the Gathering Light certainly is. I wonder considering the past history of this band why three members leave all at once again but I guess we never know what goes on behind those closed rehearsal room doors!
Hopefully, Lisa Ian H & Gonzalo wont be away for long & at least Karnataka will continue with Ian J & Enrico. I just hope they can find another lineup to do the new music justice.
Trev
Echo what Trevor said.
I don’t think we’ll ever know what happened, and personally don’t really want to. I can think of too many people who’ve been quite willing to wash dirty linen in public (I will mention no names), and it ain’t pretty.
De Ja Vue?….but if whats going to come from this is as god or better than the last time it wont just give prog a shot in the arm itl be al music
Deja-vu indeed. And in other news, Fish’s woman has left him.
Whatever the reasons behind the spilt might be, I still feel that blowing out tour dates is rather unprofessional.
Hope we hear Lisa Fury back with a new project sooner rather than later (a solo album, perhaps?). She’s got a fantastic voice.
I think it must be really hard to be creative and put on the smiles if you are not happy. I think if there was “unhappiness” in the band enough to announce that they wanted to leave(again!) then this may have transferred to the stageshow and may have compromised the show.
I think if you are unhappy in your work and it cant be resolved then leave and move on. ( Just my outlook on life in general LOL)
Im sure whoever Ian gets in to continue with Karnataka will be great and with Lisa, Ian Harris & Gonzalo we havnt seen the last of these guys especialy after all the good stuff that came out of the Gathering Light.
You’re right - there was probably an inkling of that when I saw them at what turned out to be their final gig in Derby. Musically it was great, and Lisa Fury seemed in good enough spirits, but the onstage chemistry I’ve seen with other bands just didn’t seem to be there. Perhaps one of those things you only notice in retrospect.
Seems things are looking up in camp Karnataka! Louie Palmer the session drummer who was with the band back in 2007 has been announced as the latest addition to the new line up. I think it will be interesting to see where the new band take the music. I know Enrico & Louis have big Jazz influences (-EEK!) ;o)
I have also seen that Lisa Fury is doing a new project called “Lirium” I think they are very much in the embryonic stages but they do have some demos up on the websites. Looks/sounds quite interesting so far.
Hopefully Ian H & Gonzalo will make an appearance again somewhere soon.
